One part of the experimental program of the NSF study consisted of testing six reinforced concrete slabs under one way action. Two sets of slabs were tested. The first set used regular 5 ksi concrete with normal steel (60 ksi) reinformcement and the second set used high strength concrete (15 ksi) with high strength steel (83 ksi) reinforcement. Three specimens were tested in each set.
Each concrete strength/reinforcement combination had three specimens tested. Two of the specimens were tested under one pressure-impulse combination (PH-Set 1a) . The third specimen was tested under a reduced pressure-impulse combination (PH-Set 1b). Table 1 gives a matrix of the tests conducted.
The experiments were conducted at the Engineering Research and Development Center (ERDC), Vicksburg, Mississippi using the Blast Loading Simulator (BLS) shown in figure below. The BLS is capable of simulating a uniform pressure on the blast face. Both positive and negative phases of the pressure can be captured. Data captured included pressures at six different locations, a central accelerometer and laser deflection measurement device on the back face to record deflections. Four high speed cameras were used to record the response of the slab. Digital photographs of the damage were taken subsequently.
